  CBC, duo take heat for 'girl talk' Hockey Night program

  While Hockey Night in Canada commentators Jim Hughson and Craig Simpson talk about blocked shots and great saves by Jonathan Quick, these women will talk about gorgeous players and Darryl Sutter's fashion sense.

  
  

  The CBC has partnered up with Lena Sutherland and Jules Mancuso, the two women behind While The Men Watch, an online broadcast that offers alternative commentary with "girl talk" to live sporting events.

  
  

  Sutherland and Mancuso will cover Stanley Cup final games that will be streamed on CBC's website. The program is called While the Men Watch Hockey Night.

  
  

  "As two women married to sports fanatics, there was really no escaping hockey on TV — especially during playoffs," Sutherland and Mancuso wrote in a CBC blog post describing how their online show got started. "As our men were glued to the game, we were on the phone talking to each other about what we saw on the ice in a way that was completely different than what our guys or the real announcers were saying.

  
  

  “Why were the players getting a seat and a drink in the penalty box if it's supposed to be a punishment? And how exactly did that coach pick out a brown suit and tie combo four sizes too big?"

  
  

  Billed as a show where "Sex and the City meets Hockey Night" on the duo's Twitter profile (@whilemenwatch), fans were left fuming after the show's announcement, saying it was denigrating to women who watch hockey.

  
  

  "Holy crap. Thanks for setting female sports fans back decades, CBC," Andrew Bucholtz, who runs Yahoo! Canada's CFL blog, wrote on Twitter (@AndrewBucholtz).

  
  

  "Glad to know that in 2012, we're still patronizing the female sports fan. Good show, @cbc and @whilemenwatch," tweeted user Doogie (@doogie2k).

  
  

  While the Men Watch Hockey Night will debut during Game 1 of the Stanley Cup final May 30.

  MONTREAL—Out-of-province money is rolling in for Quebec student activists amid warnings their protest movement could persist into the summer.

  
  

  Trade unions based outside Quebec have already confirmed sending more than $36,000 into the bank accounts of the province’s largest student federations.

  
  

  Union leaders in the rest of Canada say they’re now asking their memberships to vote on new donations for the student groups.

  
  

  Several union delegations are heading to Montreal for a large protest today, while sister events are being organized in different cities inside and outside Canada.

  
  

  The executive director of the Canadian Association of University Teachers says his union could approve a financial contribution for the students in the next day or two.

  
  

  James Turk says there’s added urgency to help out after the Quebec government adopted an emergency law last week that sets some restrictions on protests.

  
  

  Turk says his association could also help support student court challenges to Bill 78 — which he calls “repressive” and “worrisome.”

  
  

  The law requires organizers to give police eight hours’ notice of when and where the protest will happen — and imposes fines for offenders.

  
  

  After taking a beating over four days, from people accusing it of trampling democratic rights, the Quebec government has begun a counter-offensive in support of its law. Public Security Minister Robert Dutil has read from a list of cities with equally tough, or tougher, rules for organizing protests.

  
  

  Dutil listed Geneva, Toronto, New York, Los Angeles and Spain as jurisdictions that require far more than eight hours’ notice — up to 40 days, in the case of L.A. — in order to hold a protest.

  
  

  “Other societies with rights and freedoms to protect have found it reasonable to impose certain constraints—first of all to protect protesters, and also to protect the public,” Dutil said.

  
  

  Students have been holding regular protests since February to denounce the provincial government’s plan to increase tuition fees. Hundreds of protesters were arrested over the weekend after clashes with riot police.

  Italy "dog and cat tax" muzzled after uproar

   

  

   

  (Reuters) - A proposal to levy a tax on cats and dogs that stunned Italy on Friday turned out to be all bark and no bite after a wave of popular anger saw it withdrawn on the same day it was made public.

  
  

  Italy was abuzz for hours after local media reported that a parliamentary commission had proposed a tax on domestic "animals of affection" to raise revenue for debt-strapped cities and towns.

  
  

  Protests were voiced by everyone from animal rights groups - who said it would prompt more people to abandon animals - to politicians who called it everything from "grotesque" to "surreal" to "idiotic" to "shameful".

  
  

  There was so much reaction - all of it incredulous - that one Italian agency ran nearly 40 news items on the proposal in less than four hours.

  
  

  The proposal was withdrawn by early Friday evening however, and it seemed everyone on the commission where it was discussed was denying its paternity.

  
  

  "The only thing that's left to tax are wives and children," said parliamentarian Domenico Scilipoti.

  
  

  Italy, like many other countries across the euro zone, is struggling to revive its economy and reduce its public debt, a predicament that has prompted the country's lawmakers to try to dream up new revenue-raising measures.
